  1. I went with Cloudkicker here. While I do quite enjoy Keith Merrow’s work (and own his signature guitar), I went with the atmosphere and buildup that Cloudkicker offers. Merrow definitely has more technical proficiency and brootal riffs but when the main riffs cycles back around in the Cloudkicker track… chef’s kiss.

    1. Never listened to Merrow before. Merrow pwns, but as I think will be a common theme with these instrumental tracks is lack of narrative. While Merrow is impressive as fuck. Spice Dealer is a meandering noodle session (albeit shred/riff brutality). Whereas Cloudkicker’s “We’re Goin’ in. We’re Going Down” seems to be in some way telling a bit of a story. I can hear the an old shitty plane from the 40’s rattling as it takes off, gets into a gunfight, and is actively being shot down. The first few episodes of Book of Boba Fett sucked! Cloudkicker is my choice.

  3. Gonna have to agree with the Rager on this one. This Cloudkicker song feels a bit more “complete” as a song and has a memorable groove to it (especially on the come back). The Merrow song is good but I kinda forget what I’m listening to midway through the song. Personally, I prefer Merrow’s more recent solo work (Reading the Bones is great and Conquering Dystopia, although not solo) as they have actual drummers (Krimh and Alex Rudinger on Conquering Dystopia). Regardless, both of these songs feature programmed drums, which I strongly dislike. All of this said, when Cloudkicker paired up with Intronaut, Danny Walker crushed this song and made it so much more.

    1. Did they ever release any live recordings of that? I remember I saw Intronaut and they were playing the Cloudkicker stuff at soundcheck.

  4. I hear you on the drums. Conquering Dystopia is the more complete project, for sure. This is a track that always stuck with me that I keep going back to. And its still got both Merrow and Loomis. I love the Loomis solo. With the category, there’s going to be some programmed drums. Lots of bedroom bands. I think it will come down more to composition than performance for this category, for me.
